How to Reduce the Appearance of Cellulite

Cellulite is a very common problem among women and men. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that 90% of post-adolescent women experience some form of cellulite. And don’t think that men are immune.  Men are prone to the embarrassing orange peel effect as well, especially when they carry excess fat. So what do we do about it? It’s summer time in central Florida and bathing suits and shorts are as likely an occurrence as traffic jams on I-4.  None of us want to go through the summer feeling self-conscious about our thighs or behinds.  So what is the solution?  How can we have our proverbial cake and eat it too? Here are a few tricks minus the gimmicks…..

    1.  Diet.  Studies show that one of the causes of cellulite is a lack of proper blood flow throughout the many layers of our skin. Altering your diet can create an optimum environment for healthy blood flow and thus help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Focus on decreasing your carbohydrate, fat and salt intake while increasing the amount of fiber and water in your diet.

     2.  Lifestyle. How many times have you heard that stress isn’t good for you? 1000? Make that 1001. Stress has been shown to increase hormones in the body that can make cellulite a more likely occurrence. So take it easy. Give yourself permission to get a massage or take a day off every once in a while. Better yet, hop in a Yoga class at your gym once a week. Yoga can help you relax and regain mental focus while simultaneously increasing blood flow and flexibility.  Your body will thank you.

     3.  Exercise. Yup, you knew it was coming. Exercise is a must when it comes to cellulite reduction (among other things). Sometimes losing those few extra pounds can help reduce the appearance of cellulite by firming muscles, which in turn increases skin turgor. So focus on your strength training routine to increase lean mass in your body and add walking and biking to your routine to increase blood flow. Stay with it and don’t get discouraged. Like everything else worthwhile in life, the effort is well worth the reward.

Of course, the greatest cause of cellulite is simply bad luck and genetics.... and for these there is no cure- but timely and regular Endermologie treatments do help to effectively camouflage the appearance of the cellulite- explaining the popularity of these treatments among the jet set.
