Keep your skin looking its best- 3 decades of advice

In our Orlando plastic surgery and skin care center, we are often asked about how skin care should change over time. It is true that with each passing decade our skin transforms and we face increasing challenges presented by the aging process.

In order to slow down these changes, and maintain a radiant and youthful appearance we have to make corresponding changes in how we care for our skin as the aging process occurs.

Consider these tips to allow your skin to look its best in your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.  Prevention is key and the more you do in your 20’s the less you will have to do as the decades proceed.

Without a doubt sun exposure is responsible for a large portion of how our skin ages.  In your 20’s, and even before, you need to wear a daily SPF 30 to protect your skin.  Even if you think you are inside all day, incidental exposure such as driving, checking the mail and walking to and from school or work can gradually damage your skin.  The 20’s are an ideal time to start using a topical antioxidant such as vitamin c or coffeeberry to repair and prevent aging.  Taking an oral multi-vitamin or vitamin c supplement is not enough to fight the aging process.  Antioxidants need to be applied directly to the skin. Lastly, incorporate an exfoliant of some kind into your regimen to boost cell turnover.  This can be something as simple as a scrub used at home 2-3 times a week and having a microdermabrasion every three months. Remember, prevention is easier than correction so what you do for your skin in this decade really counts.

Where are these brown spots coming from?  When did I develop this wrinkle?  Why do my pores seem larger? These are questions you will most likely start asking yourself in your 30’s.  This is a great time to start thinking about retinol or tretinoin applied topically during your evening regimen.

While they may cause some initial redness and flaking, tretinoin will slough away those damaged cells, smooth fine lines and refine your pores.  Consider having monthly glycolic peels or microdermabrasion to address the concerns of your 30’s as well.  Much like tretinoin these treatments will encourage cell turnover and provide a more youthful glow to the skin.  I would recommend seeking this type of treatment in a plastic surgery or dermatology office with a Medical Aesthetician to receive safe and effective treatments.  Daily SPF and a medical grade antioxidant are even more important at this stage as tretinoin and exfoliation procedures can make you more susceptible to sun damage.

The 40’s- at this stage you are most likely noticing a loss of firmness, increased hyperpigmentation and maybe even redness due to broken capillaries.   IPL is a fabulous treatment to zap away unwanted brown spots and vessels with little to no down time.  Are you constantly hearing the buzz about Botox?  Botox can be administered to improve the wrinkles on your forehead, between your brows and around your eyes.  This procedure takes only about 15 minutes of your time and you can start to enjoy the amazing results in less than 2 weeks.  Do not go to just anyone for Botox though- seek out a qualified and experienced injector in a plastic surgery or dermatology office.

What you do at home will enhance and improve the results of any treatment so think about stepping up your topical antioxidants to twice a day and pursue a series of microdermabrasions or chemical peels.
