Interesting Beauty Myths

I recently asked Megan, one of my assistants, to do a bit of research on myths and old wives tales relevant to our profession. She found some interesting things... some we've all heard of (chocolate gives you pimples) and some I was even surprised to read about.

Here's Megan's post on some of our favorites. If you know any interesting or silly things people have done to be beautiful, write us! If we post it, we'll send you a gift.

Applying beer on the skin will give you a golden glow...
Unfortunately, no.  While the hops in beer have been found to help fight cancer and viruses and lower cholesterol, they will have no effect on your tan. Bathing in beer prior to lying out in the sun will have no effect on your skin, other than drying it out, increasing your chances of a sunburn and making you smell like a frat house.
Baldness is inherited from your mother’s father...

Men, stop worrying if your maternal grandfather looks like a cue ball. Yes, baldness is inherited, but lucky for you it is a genetic mixture from both parents. Researchers believe they have identified a human gene that affects hair growth. The discovery could eventually lead to new treatments for male pattern baldness and even hair removal. The gene has been used to manipulate hair growth in mice, but has not been linked to human hair growth.. yet. There are many medical and surgical treatment options available ; but remember, the sooner they are started the greater the chances for positive results!

Trimming eyelashes will make them grow longer and curl upwards...
The answer is NO. No it won’t. Just as trimming your hair will have no impact on making the hair on your head grow any faster, this will not work. Cutting them with scissors not only can be dangerous (Sharp scissors near my eyes? Never!) but it is also useless. The thin hairs that constitute the eyelashes will take a long time to grow back- and only to their previous length... in the meantime you will look weird, to say the least. If you are desperate for longer, fuller lashes, come in to our office for a consultation about Latisse.
Magnets will improve your skin just like having a natural facelift

Believe it or not, there are magnets on the market that are supposed to do wonders for your face. According to their website, “Beauty Magnets bring more circulation to the face and neck. The increased blood flow carries oxygen to skin cells, revitalizing the skin to improve tone, tighten facial muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.” There are about 20 tiny magnets that you stick to your face for 30 – 60 minutes daily. The site claims that Cleopatra used to do this same treatment to stay young. I wonder if she looked as ridiculous as the model on the website?
