The Effects Smoking Can Have on Your Plastic Surgery Procedure

Thinking of having a cosmetic procedure? Well if you are a smoker, you had better put out that cigarette- PRONTO! Not only are they terrible for your heart and lungs, but they have a significant effect on the body’s ability to heal. Cigarettes have been linked to an increased risk of blood clots, infection in the surgical incision and overall delayed healing. Smoking robs the body of oxygen which is vital to the recuperation process. Ugly scars are also a real risk that could be a result of this disgusting habit.

Nicotine causes blood vessel constriction, which will reduce the blood supply to the skin. Over time this is one of the reasons that many smokers tend to age much more quickly than nonsmokers. And no one wants to look older than they really are!

If you are having trouble quitting and staying cigarette-free, don’t worry you are not alone. Less than 50% of people that quit smoking actually stick with it after 12 months of not touching a cigarette. But if you are thinking of surgery it is imperative that you stay strong! Many surgeons will not operate on a patient unless they have put away the cigs for at least 4 weeks.

At Aesthetic Enhancements, we strive to give patients safe and stress-free experience. You should only trust a board certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Armando Soto with something as important as your body.
